The World Health Organization (WHO) indicated in its global road safety situation report that road accidents cause more than 1,200,000 deaths and 20 to 50 million non-fatal injuries each year. According to the same report, more than 90% of road accident deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries, which accounted for only 48% of the global vehicle fleet. The WHO predicted that by 2030, road accidents would rise from the ninth to the fifth cause of death.
